In this photograph, an Elephant sweater designed by the Moroccan/French designer JC de Castelbajac is modelled by Phillip Prioleau, one of Mapplethorpe’s lovers. It was commissioned by Dianne Benson for her eponymous radical fashion store Dianne B., granting Mapplethorpe total creative freedom.
