Inquire about this work

In two scenes from the movie Stepmom, characters lip-synch to Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s rendition of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” Susan Sarandon’s character dies prematurely from cancer, as did Tammy Terrell in real life. The use of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” in Stepmom is an example of the common cinematic ploy where a familiar pop song, often by a Motown artist, is used to create a bonding moment between characters in a movie and between the characters and the viewer. As is the case here, often the song is by a black artist and the actors lip-synching are white.
